Michelle Gildernew challenges Arlene Foster to engage with Republicans

24 February, 2006

Sinn Féin MP for Fermangh and South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has today called upon the DUP to engage with nationalists and republicans in Fermanagh to decide the best use for land vacated by the PSNI in the county.

Ms Foster also alleged that republicans were involved in bullying in an attempt to acquire the land for a community centre in Kinawley

Speaking today Ms Gildernew said:

"Sinn Féin has long called for lands seized by both the British Army and the RUC to be handed back to local communities, particularly if such sites can be used to the benefit of the wider community, for example, through the provision of social housing or community centres.

"Intimidation in any form is wrong, but Arlene has built her political career on making unfounded allegations against nationalists and republicans in Fermanagh.

"Instead of grandstanding on this issue, Arlene would be better sitting down with all of the elected representatives in the area to decide on the best course of action for such vacated land. However, the DUP are doing a grave disservice to the people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone by their refusal to engage with Sinn Féin." ENDS
