Power drunk Minister unfit for office

4 March, 2006

Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Justice, Equality and Human Rights, Aengus Ó Snodaigh, described the latest revelation from TG4 that no request for information was received by the Justice Ministers offices in relation to Frank Connolly as further evidence that the Michael McDowell was on a personal vendetta against the Head of the Centre for Public Inquiry when he released confidential details to his "drinking buddy" and journalist Sam Smyth. Deputy Ó Snodaigh went on the say that the Minister was "power drunk" and "out of control" and called on the Taoiseach to "rein him in or have him sacked."

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The revelation by TG4 that no official request for information was received by the offices of the Minister for Justice in relation to the Head of the Centre for Public Inquiry, Frank Connolly, shows that the Minister was on a personal vendetta when he released confidential details to his drinking buddy Sam Smyth. Far from being initiated from an external request by a journalist, as Michael McDowell has claimed, it is now obvious that it was the sinister Minister himself who initiated and contrived the whole controversy. Michael McDowell is clearly power drunk and out of control. He has not only undermined the whole concept of an individual being innocent until proven otherwise he has also done lasting damage to his office and department. He has shown that he is completely unfit for the job and I would call on the Taoiseach to rein him in or have him sacked." ENDS
