Ferris highlights cost of policing Rossport

6 March, 2006

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Natural Resources, Martin Ferris TD has drawn attention to the massive cost in Garda Resources that have been deployed to protect the Shell pipeline at Rossport. Deputy Ferris was responding to a reply from Minister for Justice Michael McDowell which states that the total cost of the Garda Operation up until December 31 last was €932,964.

Deputy Ferris said: “The huge cost to the taxpayer of protecting a facility which is both unpopular and partly installed without proper authorization, once again demonstrates the manner in which Shell are taking the Irish people for a ride on this issue. Not only do huge questions hang over the manner in which the project was approved and begun, but now the taxpayer has been forced to foot a bill to protect their interests. Ironically the cost of this is likely, under the current terms available to Shell, to vastly outweigh any foreseeable benefit to the Exchequer.” ENDS
