North West Region Investment essential
Sinn Féin MLA Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the announcement by British Direct Minister Angela Smith of an infrastructure investment of £31.6 million for the North West Institute of Further and Higher Education (NWIFHE).
Mr McLaughlin stated,
"A highly educated and motivated populace can help change the economic fortunes of the North West Region so I welcome the news today that the NWIFHE has secured these monies that will help it develop over a seven year period.
"The monies will not only refurbish existing buildings but will allow for the campus to be expanded over a seven year period with new builds. This will provide modern teaching facilities and provide fit for purpose facilities for both staff and students alike.
"It has been proven that the provision of first class further and higher education facilities can provide the basis for economic regeneration. NWIFHE has for years been the backbone in Derry for further education and I see this expansion programme as securing the future of the institute.
"Sinn Fein has for years called for a strategy of developing the higher educational sector of Magee Campus and NWIFHE as providing the base on which to build economic regeneration of the region and I am sure that today‚s announcement will be welcome to the whole region." ENDS
