Regional cancer centre

13 March, 2006

Sinn Féin health spokesperson, John O'Dowd MLA has welcomed the fact that the new regional cancer centre in Belfast is to begin treating patients from today.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"This new facility at the City Hospital was initiated during the lifetime of the power-sharing Executive at Stormont by the then health minister, and my party colleague, Bairbre de Brún.

"It is a very positive example of the benefits which can be achieved for people in the Six Counties by local political parties working and co-operating together.

"This is a great day for cancer services here. What is provided on this site is a state of the art facility that will serve patients well into this century. It will be able to take advantage of the major advances in the treatment and care of cancer patients. I have no doubt that it will establish itself as a world leader in patient care, research and teaching." ENDS
