Sinn Féin announce details of 'Failte' initiative to mark Intercultural week
Sinn Féin spokesperson on racism has announced details of a number of local government initiatives being taken by Sinn Féin Mayor and Chairs across Ireland to mark Intercultural week (19th - 25th March) and International Day Against Racism on March 21st.
The 'Failte' initiative is being run by Sinn Féin first citizens in Moyle, Derry City, Kerry, Fermanagh, Dungannon, Monaghan, Omagh, Strabane, Magherafelt and Newry and Mourne councils to welcome new citizens
Commenting on the Failte initiatives Mr Maskey said:
"This week gives all of us in political leadership the opportunity to reach out the hand of welcome to new citizens across the island.
"Local government has a vital role to play in making sure that it is accessible and that services meet the needs of ethnic minorities. Across Ireland Sinn Féin first citizens from Derry to Kerry and Monaghan to Magherafelt are taking the initiative.
"It is a lead all of us in political and civic life should follow. Whether people from ethnic minorities have been here for generation or are newly arrived on our shores we would all do well to recognise not just the richness they bring but also the energy and economic input they bring." ENDS
