Ferris supports call for fair deal for salmon fishermen

22 March, 2006

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD has voiced his support for salmon fishermen who claim that proposals on the industry threaten the survival of traditional fishermen, to the benefit of other commercial interests. Deputy Ferris was speaking at a protest outside Leinster House this afternoon.

Deputy Ferris said: "I fully support the position which has been agreed by those involved in the traditional salmon fishing sector. All buyouts of licenses must be voluntary and there must be adequate compensation for those who are bought out. Those who choose to remain in the sector must be given adequate quota and the season must not be curtailed to the extent that it will be impossible for fishermen to make a living. As with other sectors of the fishing industry there is little confidence in the scientific evidence that has been cited in support of the restrictions, and it is vital, therefore, that this is made available."ENDS
