Sinn Féin support for Trade Union action

28 March, 2006

Commenting on today's strike action by the Trade Unions here in the North, Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said that 'all public service employees across the board must have access to equal pension benefits'.

His comments come in light of the one day strike action decision taken by the Trade Unions which begun today.

Mr McGuigan said:

"Trade Unions across the North can be assured that Sinn Féin fully supports the actions and arguments that they have with regards to their pensions.  It is quite clear that the British Government must now move to alleviate this problem and issue the workers with their pension entitlements.

"They must realise that this is an equality issue and must be dealt with immediately.  Over 50,000 of these workers provide us with essential services on a daily basis therefore they should be on a par with non public sector employees.

"Sinn Féin have lobbied the British Government on the issue fair pay and fair pension schemes for public sector workers in the past and it's about time they understand that people who work in our schools, councils and transport are entitled as much as the rest of us." ENDS
