Ferris calls for consultation with Salmon fishermen

30 March, 2006

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD has called on the Department of Marine to conduct a proper consultation with salmon drift net fishermen before a final announcement is made regarding the future organisation of the industry. Deputy Ferris raised the issue in the Dáil this morning.

Deputy Ferris said: “The Department must insure that any future changes affecting salmon drift net fishermen is carried out in consultation with those involved in the industry and that a non-compulsory buy-out provides adequate compensation for those who choose to give up their licenses. Those who decide to remain fishing must be guaranteed adequate quota and sufficient fishing days to enable them to continue to make a living.”
