1 July, 2022 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Bay North, Denise Mitchell, has welcomed the passing of the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022 in at 2nd Stage in the Dáil this morning.

Speaking in the Dáil Teachta Mitchell said:

“I want to welcome this Bill which will the see many issues raised by the family members of victims and survivors of the Stardust Fire addressed.

“I want to commend Minister McEntee and her Department officials for their efforts on this, and for bringing forward this legislation in response to some major concerns that were raised previously.

“I also want to mention my Sinn Féin colleague Senator Lynn Boylan who has pushed for this change on behalf of the families, and has been a fantastic advocate for them in recent times.

“I hope this Bill removes all the remaining stumbling blocks for the families.

“I hope this inquest is thorough, human rights compliant, and sets the standard for how inquests should be conducted in future.

“There’s no doubt that this process will be emotionally draining for all involved in it, with many having to relive a night that’s etched into the back of their minds for all the wrong reasons.

“Justice for these families and survivors has been a long time coming, and I hope this is the beginning of the end of a process that delivers some answers for family members.”
