Government meeting with Britain's Philip Mountbatten's ill-advised

26 April, 2006

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Daithi Doolan has described the proposed meeting between the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Britain's Philip Mountbatten this afternoon as ill advised. He said Sinn Féin fully supports a new relationship between the people of Ireland and Britain but this must be based on mutual respect.

Councillor Doolan said:

"Many people in Ireland were very uncomfortable when the then Taoiseach John Bruton described the visit by Charles Windsor to this country in 1995 'as the most significant event in his lifetime'. I think many people will view the proposed meeting this afternoon between the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Britain's Philip Mountbatten as just as ill advised.

"The people of this island owe nothing to Britain's Royal family and developing a new relationship between the people of Ireland and Britain surely doesn't require kow towing to a British monarch." ENDS
