Only a new Executive can deliver a fair deal for local businesses

28 April, 2006

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson, Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy commenting on the 'Way Forward on Rates Reliefs for Businesses' announced by British direct rule Finance Minister Jeff Rooker today has said that it is clearly up to a new Executive to deliver a fair deal for local businesses.

Mr Molloy said:

"It is clear that the only way to get a fair deal for local businesses is with a new Executive. Jeff Rooker has made that clear.

"While there are strong cross party concerns specifically about industrial de-rating and how we should support the local economy in the long-term it is equally clear that only when we get a Executive with locally accountable ministers in place will we be in a position to actually take the important decisions.

"The 4 areas identified represent important progress. We need to recognise the barriers faced by rural economies and rural communities and also the vital role that enterprise agencies need to play in supporting indigenous business development and growth.

"These areas represent only the tip of the iceberg because in reality they will only have a minimal effect on the economy. What we really need is a economic strategy that puts the growth and development of indigenous business at its heart." ENDS
