No democrat will shed tears at demise of RIR and its bases
Commenting on the announcement today confirming the closure of a number of RIR bases across the six counties Sinn Féin spokesperson on demilitarisation Davy Hyland MLA said that nobody with an interest in building a democratic future will shed any tears over the disbandment of the RIR Home Service Battalions.
Mr Hyland said:
"The RIR Home Service battalions were a unionist militia. It grew out of the old B-Specials and UDR. Only last week in media reports it was confirmed that the British government at the highest levels knew that this organisation was up to its necks in collusion with unionist paramilitaries.
"Anyone with an interest in building a shared future based upon democracy and peace will shed no tears at the removal of this militia from the political landscape.
"What this announcement does do today is free up significant amounts of land which opens up exciting opportunities for communities who have suffered for so long with British war apparatus in their midst.
"It is important that these sites are developed with the interests of these communities at the core of any future plans." ENDS
