Parades Commission rapidly descending into a shambles

16 May, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Upper Bann John O'Dowd has said that the Parades Commission is rapidly turning into a shambles and needs urgent action to remove both Don McKay and David Burrows if confidence is top be restored.

Mr O‚Dowd said:

"The new Parades Commission since the day it was appointed has stumbled from one crisis to another. Nationalists were rightly sceptical about the appointment of two leading Orangemen to the Commission. The fact that it has since emerged that both forged elements of their application form only adds to the sense of alarm.

"Both Don McKay and David Burrows need either to resign or to be removed by the British government immediately if the Parades Commission is to restore public confidence in its ability to deliver as we approach the heart of the marching season.

"If the British government insist on sticking with these individuals then the Parades Commission descent into a shambles which we are currently witnessing will undoubtedly continue." ENDS
