A single patient on a trolley for hours is unacceptable - Crowe

16 May, 2006

Speaking in the Dáíl today Sinn Féin Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe called on Minister for Health Mary Harney to "urgently take measures to reduce the number of patients currently on trolleys in this state, which currently stands at 209 people".

Deputy Crowe said, "12 patients are currently on trolleys my own constituency in Tallaght hospital. A single patient having to endure long hours sometimes days on a trolley is unacceptable, particularly in a wealthy country. A couple of hundred patients having to do so is a scandal and represents the crisis that needs to be addressed".

"Mary Harney has failed miserably to deliver on her promises after 18 months as Minister for Health.

“The FF/PD Programme for Government of 2002 stated that they would expand public beds in line with a programme to increase total capacity by 3,000, this they have failed to do.” ENDS
