Sinn Fein to demand Burrows removal at Parades Commission meeting

16 May, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Upper Bann John O'Dowd this evening said that Don McKay had little option but to resign from the Parades Commission. Mr O'Dowd also revealed that he will meet with the Commission in the morning and he will demand the removal of David Burrows as a Commissioner also.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"Don McKay's position on the Parades Commission was untenable. His resignation had to come or else it is my belief that the British government would have had to remove him.

"Nationalist confidence in the Parades Commission ability to perform its important role is at an all time low. The current Commission has lurched from one crisis to another.

"It has now emerged that David Burrows has also falsified his application form. It is important that the British government do not drag their heels in relation to removing him from his post as they have with Don McKay.

"The Parades Commission now have a massive job of work to rebuild public confidence in their ability to perform impartially as we face into the marching season." ENDS
