Michelle Gildernew MP welcomes Breastfeeding Awareness Week

17 May, 2006

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has today spoken of the need to promote Breastfeeding Awareness Week and 'the need for support for mothers who breastfeed'.

Speaking today Ms Gildernew said:

"Breastfeeding Awareness Week presents an opportunity to highlight an important aspect of mothering. As a mother of two young children I am well aware of the benefits of breastfeeding and that breast milk is the best form of nutrients for babies.

"In many cases there is a social stigma attached to breastfeeding. Many young mothers feel uncomfortable feeding their babies in public, and this is a situation that we must address. Mothers should be able to feel relaxed when feeding their babies, not made to feel that this is a socially unacceptable practice.

"Much good work is being done to remove the barriers associated with breast feeding in public. I want to back any campaign which raises awareness of this issue and promotes the benefits of breastfeeding to young mothers and their families.

"As part of Breastfeeding Awareness week, I will be attending an event in Parkanaur, Co Tyrone this coming Friday to create further awareness of breast feeding and the need to encourage more nursing mothers to donate to the Human Milk Bank in Irvinestown." ENDS
