Ferris: "Poll Vindicates Rossport Five"
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Natural Resources, Martin Ferris TD has said that a poll in one of this morning's national newspapers vindicates the stand that the Rossport Five and other objectors to the proposed Corrib pipeline have taken. The poll shows that only one fifth of respondents supports the current Shell proposal. 44% support the re-routing of the pipeline and 17% are opposed to the project proceeding at all.
Deputy Ferris said: "The massive opposition to the Shell project vindicates the position of the Rossport community and confirms what any reasonable observer knew was the case. There is over-whelming opposition to the project proceeding as currently proposed, and this places a clear onus on both the project managers and the Government to ensure that the concerns expressed are properly addressed.
"It is also clear that not only are people concerned about the safety aspects of the pipeline but are also increasingly aware that under current revenue terms that the project will bring no long-term economic to the country. Until this issue is addressed alongside the health and safety concerns, then the project cannot allowed to proceed."
