We need to deal with Sellafield and protect the environment - Bairbre de Brún

30 May, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today called upon the European Commission to "act immediately to deal with both the British Government and BNFL in the strongest possible manner.”

Ms de Brún made her comments after it emerged that the European Court of Justice reprimanded Ireland for taking a case against the Sellafield Nuclear Power Plant to the United Nations rather than to the EU Court of Justice.

Speaking from Brussels Ms de Brún said:

“Today’s decision by the European Court of Justice is disappointing. It has been common knowledge for a number of months now that the decision would be less than favourable for Ireland.

“If the European Commission is claiming competency in the area of the marine environment, then it must act immediately to deal with both the British Government and BNFL in the strongest possible manner.”

"Sellafield has a track record of incompetence and a history of safety lapses, yet the Commission has been less than strident in dealing with this and its impact on Ireland.

"Having taken the Irish government to task for taking its case to the United Nations, the European Commisssion must now show that this is not an indication of a lack of concern about the problems caused by Sellafield over the years.

"We need to deal with Sellafield and to protect the environment. The European Commssion must act now." ENDS
