All-Ireland energy market can deliver real gains

31 May, 2006

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA has welcomed the joint announcement by ESB and NIE on the construction of a second North-South electricity interconnector. Mr McLaughlin said that the development of the all-Ireland energy market has the potential to deliver real gains for industry as well as being an important element in the battle to eradicate fuel poverty and ensuring security of supply on the island of Ireland.

Mr McLaughlin said:

“Construction of a second North-South electricity interconnector is an important next step in the development of the single all-Ireland energy market and in achieving an energy market that is secure, diverse, efficient and environmentally sustainable and that can deliver real gains by significantly reducing cost.

“The development of the all-Ireland energy market has the potential to deliver real gains for industry as well as being an important element in the battle to eradicate fuel poverty and ensuring security of supply on the island of Ireland.

“However, rising global energy prices and Ireland’s dependence on fossil fuels and worldwide markets demand greater support and enhancement of the renewable energy sector.

“While it is important that there will now be greater interconnector capacity there now needs to be a greater urgency in removing the remaining barriers to the single energy market with a need for greater harmonisation and co-operation across many other areas.”
