MacLochlainn - time for government to support cancer care services for the North West

1 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Donegal Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn has expressed his regret at the decision of Consultants in Letterkenny Hospital to stop treating breast cancer patients in protest at the Health Service Executive's refusal to appoint a permanent breast surgeon.  Councillor MacLochlainn said ‘it is time that the government treated the demand for cancer care services for the North West more seriously.

Councillor MacLochlainn said:

“Today’s decision by consultants in Letterkenny Hospital is deeply regrettable and it is vital that the government intervene and resolve the situation as quickly as possible.  Cancer care patients in the North West are already treated as second class citizens.  We have the crazy situation where breast screening is not available to women in Donegal despite being fully available across the Border. Cancer care patients in County Donegal are told they don’t have the critical mass for the provision of local services.  This is not good enough.

“The government needs to treat this issue more seriously.  Sinn Féin is calling for the development of a meaningful cross-border approach with close co-operation between Letterkenny Hospital and Altnagalvin on the issue of cancer care services for the North West.”ENDS
