Craigavon council AGM suspended in legal row

7 June, 2006

The Annual General Meeting of Craigavon Borough Council, which was due to take place this morning at 10.00am, has been suspended. The meeting had been due to elect the Mayor and deputy Mayor.

The meeting was suspended in order that the Council may seek legal advice. This follows a meeting of the council on Monday night when the Mayor of the Council, Cllr George savage (UUP) refused to permit a Sinn Féin motion proposing that the positions of chairs and vice-chairs of council committees be allocated on the basis of party strengths.

A solicitor acting on behalf of a Sinn Féin councillor had formally requested that the election of chairs and vice-chairs should not take place until after the motion was debated. ENDS
