Bairbre de Brún welcomes all Ireland waste management delegation to European Parliament
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today hosted a delegation of waste management campaigners to the European Parliament in Brussels.
The delegation of Sinn Féin Councillors and representatives, environmental campaigners from Friends of the Earth, VOICE and community groups from across Ireland, held a series of meetings with NGOs, European Commission officials and Irish MEPs representatives.
Speaking from Brussels Ms de Brún said:
"Today's visit to the European Parliament by environmental campaigners is part of a Sinn Féin initiative to open up the EU institutions to Irish individuals and campaign groups so they can actively lobby those in positions of influence.
"Today's meetings were both informative and useful for participants who were able to directly question European Commission officials on waste management and broader environmental issues.
"There is no doubt that the EU faces a waste management crisis today and in the coming years. That is why we must get things right now, through the promotion of sustainable waste management strategies based on the prevention reduction, reuse and recycling of waste.
Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Daithi Doolan added:
"Today's meeting with European Commission officials provided an opportunity to brief them on the levels of opposition to incineration in Ireland. There are a number of environmentally friendly alternatives to incineration. Today's meetings were also about exploring these options and learning from the progressive experiences of other European countries.
"Sinn Féin is committed to tackling the issues of waste management through the implementation of a zero waste policy and the criminal practices of illegal dumping on an all Ireland basis and both the British and Irish Governments have responsibilities towards ensuring environmental sustainability into the future."
