How many safety breaches before Sellafield is closed? Bairbre de Brún

8 June, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today demanded to know how many safety breaches will have to occur at the Sellafield plant before the British Government and the British Nuclear Group Sellafield (BNGSL) decommission the facility.

Ms de Brún made her comments after BNGSL pleaded guilty in an English court to breaching its license regarding radioactive leaks last year.

Speaking today Ms de Brún said:

"How many safety breaches will have to occur before the British Government and the Sellafield operators end the nuclear horror show on the Cumbrian coast? Here we have BNGSL admitting to radioactive leaks after the British Health and Safety Authority uncovered three prolonged breaches of their licence.

"Communities in the North of England and across the eastern Irish seaboard are living in the shadow of the most discredited and unstable nuclear power plant in all of Western Europe. The legacy of Sellafield will be of consistent safety lapses, missing plutonium and inaccessible radioactive ponds.

"The closure of Sellafield must be an immediate priority for the Irish Government. The government has a responsibility to relentlessly pursue Britain at local, national and European levels to press for its closure. It must also press for no further facilities to be built. Meanwhile the British Government continue to put the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk from a nuclear facility which would not discriminate in the aftermath of a serious accident."
