Rural Planning - protest against PPS 14

9 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Agriculture and Rural Development Spokesperson, Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has said that the approach outlined in the draft proposals on rural planning published by Jeff Rooker on March 16th will disrupt the fabric of rural living and called on British direct rule ministers to listen carefully to the opposition to PPS 14 or risk a serious backlash.

Speaking ahead of a planned Belfast City Centre protest Ms Gildernew said:

"It is time that people took the threat of PPS 14 seriously. It will disrupt the fabric of the rural way of life.

"The problems have been created by weak, ineffective and inconsistent planning and unscrupulous property developers not people living in rural communities. It is wrong to punishment rural communities for bad planning laws and implementation by planning services.

"Enough is enough.

"The disruption caused by today's protest to urban living is nothing compared to the disruption that will be caused to rural way of life for rural communities unless the British government listen to the concerns about the impact of their draft proposals on rural planning.

"Sinn Féin has also now formally written to the Equality Commission requesting a (paragraph 9) investigation into the Department of Regional Development and the failure to comply with its own Equality Scheme that was approved by the Commission." ENDS
