11 June, 2006

A major event to commemorate the 1981 Hunger Strikes will take place in Liberty Hall in Dublin City Centre this evening (Sunday 11th). Organised by the Dublin 1981 Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee, among those addressing the event will be former Hunger Striker Laurence McKeown, Malachy McCreesh, brother of Raymond McCreesh who died on the 1981 Hunger Strike and Seán Crowe TD. The meeting will begin at 8pm and is open to the public.

Speaking prior to the commemorative event Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe said:

"This day 25 years ago nine men and women from the H-Blocks and Armagh, including four Hunger Strikers, stood in the 1981 General Election and received massive support. Hunger Striker Kieran Doherty was elected TD for Cavan Monaghan and blanketman Paddy Agnew topped the poll to be elected TD for Louth.

"Throughout 1981 Dublin city was brought to a standstill on numerous occasions as tens of thousands of people walked out of work and took to the streets in support of the Hunger Strikers and to voice their anger at the silence of the political establishment in Dublin.

"Throughout this year commemorative events are taking place across the country to remember the Hunger Strikers and here in Dublin tonight a major commemorative event will take place in Liberty Hall. I would call on people to take the time tonight and attend the event."ENDS
