New City Manager must respect democracy - Doolan

12 June, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has this morning called on, "the proposed new City Manger for Dublin, John Tierney, to respect the democratic mandate of the City Councillors and oppose the planned Poolbeg incinerator".

Speaking in Ringsend ahead of tonight's City Council meeting, Cllr. Doolan said:

"One of the most pressing issues facing Dublin is the proposed incinerator. This incinerator has been imposed by the unelected City management against the clear opposition of the people of Ringsend, Sandymount and surrounding areas. In fact, the people's elected representatives have repeatedly rejected the plan as well. Additionally, the City Development plan actually prohibits any incinerator from being built in Ringsend. I hope that John Tierney will respect the democratic wishes of those with a mandate and scrap these incinerator plans immediately.

" Sinn Fein wants a clear committment from John Tierney that he will respect the mandate of the people's elected representatives. If we are to solve the many problems facing this city we must do so in a confident, open, democratic way and that means communities must be at the centre of all solutions." ENDS
