Hanson told to get real about problems facing first time buyers

13 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Fra McCann MLA has lambasted the pleas of British direct rule Housing Minister David Hanson to the Council of Mortgage Lenders for them to do more to help first time buyers.

Mr McCann said:

"It is time that David Hanson woke up and took a long hard look at what is happening to the housing market. Every day it is becoming harder for first time buyers to get a toe hold on the property ladder.

"While there is certainly more that groups like the Council of Mortgage Lenders can do in terms of putting in place cheap mortgage packages and greater flexibility in dealing with repossessions, Mr Hanson should know that central government has to be the main driver in delivering affordable housing.

"The situation is being made worse by the huge growth in the buy-to-let market and the activities of unscrupulous property developers.

"Sinn Féin have already called for a root and branch review of the housing market covering social and affordable housing as well as the buy-to-let market. Everyday that Mr Hanson refuses to act is a day where the housing situation deteriorates. " ENDS
