Sinn Féin hit out at destruction of Graveyard in Glenavy attack
Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Butler has hit out at that those who vandalised a Church of Ireland graveyard in Glenavy.
"This wanton destruction must be deplored by everyone in the wider community. Unfortunately this is not the first incident that has happened at St Aidan's Church. Those involved in this desecration should reflect on how their actions will impact on the families of those buried there."
Paul Butler said he wanted to send a message of sympathy to the Church of Ireland in Glenavy, and in particular the Rev John Rutter, who has worked hard over the last couple of years to try and stop these types of incidents.
Cllr Butler said:
"I know that John Rutter and the Church of Ireland have been engaged with youth groups in the area to try and provide youth facilities in Glenavy.
"There had been a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour in Glenavy village recently and a marked increase in attacks on property and vandalism in the area which people in the village have raised with me.
"Whatever the reason was for this attack it was totally wrong. I am calling on those who are engaged in this type of activity to stop and reflect on how disrespectful and hurtful their actions are to the families of those whose graves have been destroyed." ENDS
