Ferris welcomes commitment to all-Ireland electricity market

19 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Energy spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has welcomed the pledge by Energy Ministers North and South of the border to put in place legislation to allow for a single electricity market on the island by July 2007. Deputy Ferris said the move must herald the emergence of a low cost all-Ireland energy market.

Deputy Ferris said, "Today's announcement by the 26 County Minister for Communications Marine and Natural resources Noel Dempsey and the 6 County direct rule Energy Minister Maria Eagle is a welcome development. Sinn Féin has long argued for the establishment of a low cost all-Ireland energy market, beneficial to everybody on the Island.

"It is imperative that both Noel Dempsey and Maria Eagle live up to the commitments made today and bring forward legislation to allow for a single electricity market on the island. This move must herald the emergence of a low cost all-Ireland energy market by July 2007.

"The development of the all-Ireland energy market has the potential to deliver real gains for industry as well as being an important element in the battle to eradicate fuel poverty and ensuring security of supply on the island of Ireland." ENDS
