Ian Milne - New Chair of Magherafelt District Council

20 June, 2006

The new chair of Magherafelt District Council, Sinn Féin Councillor Ian Milne, has called on everyone to engage fully in the Council.

Cllr. Milne said:

"I am pleased to have been nominated by my party and to accept the position of Chair and call on everyone to pull together and engage fully in the council.

"You all know the background that I come from, and I can assure you that I am of the people for the people. I will not be put of track by anyone and will do the job and represent everyone as best I can.

"I call for a unified approach from the council in relation to the issues affecting the people of South Derry.

"There are many major issues affecting this area such as rural planning and the down-grading of our hospital and it is important that these issues and other bread and butter issues are met with a collective response from this council. ENDS

Sinn Féin MP for Mid-Ulster Martin McGuinness has extended his good wishes to party colleague Ian Milne who was last night elected as the Chairperson of Magherafelt District Council.

Mr McGuinness said:

"Ian Milne is a hugely respected republican within South Derry and indeed beyond. His election as Chairperson of Magherafelt District Council last night is a recognition of the service Ian has given his community over many years.

"I wish Ian all the best during his year as Chair and I am sure that he will build upon the good work undertaken in recent years by his fellow Sinn Féin Councillors in Magherafelt." ENDS
