Ó Snodaigh calls for protections for asylum seekers and refugees on World Refugee Day
Marking World Refugee Day Sinn Féin Justice, Equality and Human Rights spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has called for the rights of all asylum seekers and refugees to be protected.
Speaking in the Dáil today on World Refugee Day 2006 Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The definition of refugee is outdated, it is a cold-war construct and it is too narrow to afford protection to all those in genuine need of it. Because of this there is a pressing need for this government to introduce a formal, transparent and accountable system of complementary protections. It is a shameful indictment on this Government that they have thus far failed to provide such a system.
He added, "There is also an urgent need for a substantial revision of the Dublin II regulations to ensure that the rights of asylum seekers and refugees are protected as proposed by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees last April." ENDS
