Burke to bring forward motion to Dublin City Council calling for stab vests to be provided to fire fighters and ambulance crews

22 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke has a motion going to the July sitting of Dublin City Council calling for stab vests to be provided to ambulance crews and fire fighters working in the city.

Councillor Burke said:

"Over the last few months we have seen an increase in attacks on emergency workers, in particular ambulance crews and fire fighters, including one particularly vicious attack on a fire fighter in my own constituency.

"There are very practical steps that need to be taken at community level to stop such attacks and there are also steps required to ensure that emergency workers have as much protection as possible.

"At the July meeting of Dublin City Council I am bringing forward a motion calling for stab vests to be provided to ambulance crews and fire fighters working in the city. I am also calling for CCTV cameras to be put into ambulances.

"I hope that I will receive cross party support for this motion and that action will be taken immediately." ENDS
