Hendron again challenged over Springfield Road parade decision

26 June, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for West Belfast Fra McCann today repeated his call for senior SDLP member Joe Hendron to state his position on last weekends Orange Parade through the nationalist community on the Springfield Road.

Mr McCann said:

"It seems remarkable that in the run up to the Springfield Road parade and in the days since senior SDLP member Joe Hendron, a member of the Parades Commission, has refused to put on the public record his position regarding the parade.

"SDLP claims to oppose the Orange Order coat trailing through nationalist areas carry little weight while such a senior party figure was part of the decision which led to the rights of the nationalist community on the Springfield Road being trampled over and his continuing refusal to publicly state his position.

"The decision to force the parade through the peace line and into a nationalist area caused widespread anger within the wider West Belfast community. The fact that the most senior member of the SDLP in West Belfast was part of this process has only added to the sense of annoyance currently being felt." ENDS
