Garvaghy Road decision

30 June, 2006

Sinn Féin MLA John O Dowd has said the decision by the Parades Commission to reroute the Orange Order away from the Garvaghy road is the only logical decision the Commission could have come to.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"This new Parades Commission has been dogged by Peter Hain's political interference in the appointments process and nationalists remain unconvinced by its ability to make balanced decisions. Today's decision does not end that suspicion.

"The continued refusal of Portadown Orangemen to negotiate routes and venues of parades needs to be the continued focus of the commission not a political agenda of the NIO.

"The Commission must also recognise that the long term solution may well be that there is no future march along the Garvaghy road by the Orange Order." ENDS
