SDLP side with securocrats over Crossmaglen land grab
Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy today said that the silence of the SDLP regarding the attempt by the PSNI and the Policing Board to steal land adjacent to Crossmaglen Square exposed their true attitude to the demilitarisation agenda.
Mr Murphy said:
"A number of years ago during the Weston Park talks a senior member of the SDLP stated that the issue of demiltarisation was not an SDLP issue and it was up to republicans and the British government to resolve it. Since then in a superficial way the SDLP have sought to row back from that position.
"When it emerged late last week that the PSNI, through the Policing Board, were attempting a shabby land grabbing operation from local people in Crossmaglen the SDLP silence was deafening. We can only assume given their role on the Policing Board that the SDLP endorse this land theft by the PSNI and are simply hoping to ride out any adverse publicity that will arise.
"It seems that for the SDLP it is better to stay on the side of the securocrats in the PSNI who are behind this plan than side with local nationalists and republicans demanding a complete end to the British occupation in South Armagh." ENDS
