EU Parliament should demand Israeli withdrawal from Gaza - de Brún

4 July, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today said that the European Parliament should "demand Israel's immediate withdrawal from Gaza".

Ms de Brún made her comments before the European Parliament is due to debate the matter in plenary session tomorrow (Wednesday 5th July).

Speaking this afternoon Ms de Brún said:

"The European Parliament will tomorrow debate the continuing situation in Palestine which seems to be deteriorating by the day and with air strikes reported for the seventh successive night.

"A strong response is required from the European Parliament. It must send out the message that the collective punishment of Palestinians is wrong and the targeting of essential services such as electricity and water supplies are in direct contravention of the Geneva Convention.

"From a humanitarian point of view the situation within Palestine remains precarious. International aid agencies have reported dangerous shortages in medicines whilst food and fuel is running short. Having travelled to Palestine at the beginning of this year to act as an international election observer, I am well aware of the hardship and conditions in which the Palestine people are forced to live.

"Tomorrow, the European Parliament can send out the clear message to the world that it opposes Israeli aggression and that it is demanding Israel's immediate withdrawal from Gaza." ENDS
