Review of Attorney General's office will not allay public concern

6 July, 2006

Commenting on the Report of the Review of the office of the Attorney General, Sinn Féin Dáil leader and Health and Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:

“This Report will not allay public concern about how the debacle concerning statutory rape law was allowed to happen. It is hard to accept that all that was involved was an administrative error. Public concern will in fact be compounded by the failure of the Government, on the very day this report is published, to fulfil its promise to establish an all-party committee on child protection. Instead they have set up a committee that excludes both Sinn Féin and the Green Party.

“We will be studying this Report in detail and, despite our exclusion from the Committee, we will also participate fully in the debate on the way forward for child protection.” ENDS
