Festival funding breakthrough welcomed by Gerry Adams
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams, MP for West Belfast has welcomed today's announcement by the British Secretary of State Peter Hain that Feile an Phobail, the Ardoyne Fleadh Cheoil and the New Lodge Festival will receive additional funding.
Mr Adams said:
"The cut in funding to these projects was entirely unacceptable. Today's announcement and the review follow months of vigorous lobbying. I welcome the restoration of the funding. However, this piecemeal approval is an unacceptable way to deal with these wonderful community initiatives. Nor is it acceptable that the funding be restored for one year only."
"Mainstream funding is required and Feile an Phobail and other projects need to be treated properly. There is widespread public concern about the disparity in funding of the community sector. This last minute breakthrough has eased the difficulties for organisers. I commend everyone involved." ENDS
