PSNI and loyalists return with more flags to Lurgan Town Centre
Sinn Féin MLA John O Dowd has described this mornings erection of flags in Lurgan town centre as a carbon copy of an incident 2 weeks ago, his party has lodged a complaint with the Police Ombudsman's office about the original incident which saw PSNI guarding loyalists as they erected flags and bunting in Lurgan Town centre
Mr O Dowd said,
"This morning the PSNI arrived in Lurgan town centre with a group of loyalists and ensured that the loyalists were allowed to erect flags and buntings without hindrance or interference.
"The PSNI in Lurgan have obviously decided to ignore Nuala O Loan's investigation into the previous incident or have got so enthralled in the build up to the twelfth that they have forgotten that a police service is supposed to uphold the law not facilitate those breaking it.
"Lurgan town centre has now been marked out as loyalist territory, no catholic need apply, is the message that is being sent out and that message could not of been delivered if the PSNI had not provided an armed escort to the law breakers.
"Serious questions need to be answered about the attitude of the PSNI in Lurgan to this issue, this is not a community problem it is a policing and justice issue and the issue is quite simple, is the PSNI going to allow Lurgan town centre to become a no go area for the nationalist population or is it going to uphold the law?ENDS
