Harney claims that crisis in A&E has turned a corner 'unbelievable'

11 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has described Mary Harney's comments that the crisis in A&E has turned a corner as 'unbelievable' and will cause offence to the 189 people who are lying on trolleys in A&E units across the state.' Ms. McDonald said "All the evidence suggests not that the A&E situation has turned the corner but that the Tanaiste may be going round the bend."

Ms. McDonald said:

"Mary Harney's comments that the crisis in A&E has turned a corner are unbelievable and will cause offence to the 189 people currently lying on trolleys in A&E units across the state. Despite her claims of a massive improvement on this time last year, it is actually only 3 less than on 8th July 2005.

"It is a scandal that anyone would be left on a trolleys at any time of year, but the fact that so many people are on trolley in the middle of the summer highlights the depth of the crisis in A&E.

"The Tánaiste has failed to put in place the key measures needed to ensure that the A&E trolley numbers do not reach record figures again this coming winter. She has failed to make real progress towards the extra 3000 acute hospital beds needed. She has failed to ensure that consultants spend more time working in the public system. She has failed to roll out the network of primary care centres promised as far back as 2001.

"All the evidence suggests not that the A&E situation has turned the corner but that the Tanaiste may be going round the bend." ENDS
