Nationalists attacked by parade followers in Whitewell

12 July, 2006

North Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Tierna Cunningham has appealed for the Orange Order to get a grip on parade supporters after nationalists in the Whitwell area were attacked this morning.

Cllr. Cunningham said:

"This morning a number of nationalists in the Whitewell area were victims of sectarian attacks carried out by those attending the annual 12th parade.

"Amongst those injured were a young child who was struck by a paint bomb and suffered relatively serious injuries.

"I am appealing to the Orange Order leadership to get a grip of this issue. They cannot simply wash their hands of those people who gather to follow their parades. Nationalists hold the Orange Order completely responsible for the conduct of parade followers." ENDS
