Admission of UDA support for DUP will surprise nobody

14 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Upper Bann John O'Dowd today said that few nationalists will be surprised at the revelation made on the BBC Talkback show by leading UPRG figure Frankie Gallagher that the vast majority of UDA members were also strong supporters of the DUP.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"Today on the Talkback show senior UPRG figure Frankie Gallagher publicly acknowledged the fact that the vast majority of UDA members are also strong followers of Ian Paisley and the DUP. This revelation will come as no surprise to nationalists and republicans.

"For many years the DUP have sought to propagate the myth that they have no association with unionist paramilitaries. This despite Ian Paisley‚s direct involvement in organisations like the Third Force and Ulster Resistance. Numerous convicted loyalist killers have been on the record stating that they got involved in unionist paramilitary death squads as a direct result of the speeches and direction provided by Ian Paisley.

"It would do the DUP better if they stopped playing games with this issue. Continuing denials about their relationship to unionist paramilitaries serves nobody. The DUP would do better to come clean and stop dodging their responsibilities on this issue as they continue to dodge their responsibilities in the wider political process." ENDS
