Second shooting in Greenfort leaves residents in fear

17 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Dublin Mid West Representative Joanne Spain has reacted angrily to the news of a second shooting in the Greenfort area of Clondalkin over the weekend. Two young women were shot at on Saturday and Sunday and residents in the area are now living in fear for their lives.

Ms Spain said:

"It is outrageous that just 24 hours after a one young woman was taken to hospital following a drive-by shooting that a 17-year-old girl could have also suffered the consequences of a gun crime.

"Why was there no increased garda presence in the area following Saturday night's incident? If this was Dalkey or Blackrock, rather than Quarryvale, perhaps then residents could have felt safer following the first altercation.

"The use of guns like this in Clondalkin is too serious an escalation in crime to be ignored. Gardaí must be given the resources to properly police areas were this kind of frightening thing is happening.

"Residents in Clondalkin have rang me this morning to tell me that they are terrified for their own and their children's lives and they don't want to feel that they can't go out onto the street for fear of being shot.

"This level of crime has been allowed to develop over a long time in Clondalkin by successive neglectful governments. It's time now for someone in Government to put a stop to what is happening in these communities."ENDS
