DUP again seek to block work of Preparation for Government Committee

17 July, 2006

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh & South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew today said that the DUP policy of ‘blocking and messing’ on the Preparation for Government Committee continued unabated this afternoon. Ms Gildernew’s comments came after the DUP set out to block the establishment of three sub groups to look at specific issues as demanded by the British Secretary of State.

Ms Gildernew said:

“The antics of the DUP representatives on the Preparation for Government Committee would be farcical if it were not so serious. Today once again they trotted into the meeting with one agenda and one agenda only - to block progress and frustrate efforts at bring about an inclusive Executive.

“The British Secretary of State Peter Hain had instructed the Preparation for Government Committee to establish three sub groups to deal with the institutions, economic matters and policing and justice. The DUP originally tried to block the concept entirely and when that failed they adopted a different tactic. Today they agreed to go onto the economic sub group but refused to take part in the other two. The deliberately blocked agreement on standing orders for these sub groups thus ensuring that they cannot function.

“The actions of the DUP on this committee are the practical outworking of Ian Paisley’s rant on July 12th. All Paisley did was publicly express what the DUP have been doing behind the closed doors of the Preparation for Government Committee for the past number of weeks.

“Let me be very clear. There is only one party on that Committee not interested in power sharing. There is only one party on that Committee opposed to equality. There is only one party on that Committee wedded to the failed politics of the past. That party is the DUP and their agenda of blocking and frustrating progress is there for all to see.” ENDS
