Anger at attack on Catholic Church

19 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Antrim Philip McGuigan has said that local people are angry and disappointed after a sectarian arson attack on a Catholic church outside Ballycastle in the early hours of this morning.

Mr McGuigan said:

"In the early hours of this morning a small Catholic Church at Glenshesk Road outside Ballycastle was broken into and set alight. There is little doubt that this is the latest in a long line of sectarian attacks on Churches, homes, businesses and halls in this area.

"Local people are both angry and indeed disappointed at this attack. Community relations in this area are normally good, however the decision by the Orange Order to march through Ballycastle last week did undoubtedly heighten tensions.

"I would once again appeal for an end to sectarian attacks and would urge people within the community to remain calm in the face of deliberately provocative attacks like this." ENDS
