Sinn Féin delegation to travel to Cloverhill prison to view conditions in which immigrants are held

21 July, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún will join party colleagues Mary Lou McDonald MEP and Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD in a visit to West Dublin’s Cloverhill prison this coming Monday (24.07.06).

Speaking prior to the visit Ms de Brún said:

“In September 2005 I made a visit to Cloverhill prison as part of a cross party delegation of Irish MEPs, to view the conditions in which third country nationals are held here in Ireland. Monday’s visit by Sinn Féin will be about revisiting Cloverhill and gathering as much information as possible regarding the procedures and treatment of immigrants held in Irish jails.

“We will be particularly keen to see the conditions – the cells, health and education provision and facilities available for family reunions.

“Sinn Féin has argued strongly for some time that asylum seekers and irregular migrants should not be detained, and we will continue to pursue this point at national and EU level. However, our central focus on Monday is to view the conditions in which prisoners are housed. We also hope to speak with those detained at Cloverhill to hear first hand of their experiences and concerns.” ENDS
