Sinn Féin call for end of 'care and maintenance' of All Ireland Bodies
Sinn Féin General Secretary Mitchel McLaughlin MLA speaking after attending the meeting of the Economy sub-committee of the 'Preparation for Government' committee at Stormont today has called for an immediate end to the 'care and maintenance' approach to the all Ireland Bodies, including such as Waterways Ireland, An Foras and InterTradeIreland.
Mr McLaughlin said:
"The two governments need to set out their clear intention to deliver on the all Ireland elements of the Good Friday Agreement. The continued 'care and maintenance' approach to the all-Ireland Bodies such as An Foras and InterTradeIreland just doesn't make sense.
"If the two governments are going to do this in January then there is no reason why they can't do it now. If the DUP catch themselves on and we get the power-sharing Executive and all-Ireland Ministerial Council in November then this will also happen. Why waste time when there is much important work that could and should be taken forward that will benefit people right across the island.
"Indeed, what we need to be talking about is how we strategically expand the number, role and remit of the all-Ireland bodies. Areas such as Health, Agriculture and Fishing, economic development, transport infrastructure and road safety all demand the development of new all Ireland implementation bodies." ENDS
