Hain wrong to play politics with manufacturers

26 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has said that Peter Hain's decision to play politics with the issue of industrial de-rating, just as the earlier announcement about academic selection and the 11+, is disgraceful.

Ms Gildernew said:

"Issues such as industrial de-rating and indeed the reform of rates as indeed the future education of our children are just too important to be used in a game of cat and mouse with the DUP.

"The reality is that there is no excuse for the DUP not to engage in setting up the power sharing Executive so that we can elect local ministers. All this sorry behaviour does is show us that we need to end direct rule as a matter of urgency.

"Linking the issue to the November 24th deadline is a mistake.

"The DUP are gifting this situation to Peter Hain. If they would show some political maturity then we would be spared this type of juvenile political posturing.

"It is clear that we need to do much more to support the business community but unfortunately the longer the DUP continue to run away from their responsibilities the longer we will be at the mercy of British direct rule ministers." ENDS
