World's gaze on Lebanon, but we must not forget Palestinian plight - Bairbre de Brún

26 July, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today called upon the international community to stand by the people of Gaza in their hour of need. Ms de Brún urged people to ‘remember that attacks on Gaza are continuing unabated’.

Speaking today Ms de Brún said:

“Whilst the world’s gaze has understandably been fixed on Lebanon over the past fortnight, it is important that we do not lose sight of the fact that ordinary Palestinians are also suffering as a result of continuing Israeli aggression. Because international attention has been diverted to Lebanon, Israeli is being given a free reign to bomb their way across the Gaza Strip.

“Just today it has been reported that at least twelve people were killed in the Gaza Strip, including a three year old girl. Israel is completely out of control. More than 100 Palestinians have died as a result of this latest round of Israeli aggression and wholly disproportionate use of force.

“Innocent Palestinians are dying on a daily basis and the infrastructure around them is beginning to crumble. I would ask people to remember that attacks on Gaza are continuing unabated and I call on the international community to stand by the people of Gaza in their hour of need.” ENDS
